Solar panels in Morocco: seven steps for your project

A photovoltaic project starts with consumption and building conditions, not merely panel count. Usage times, space and technical constraints determine a suitable installation.

1. Gather electricity bills

Ideally provide a year of bills to show seasonal changes. List daytime appliances, pumps and machinery. A business active in sunlight differs from a home occupied mainly in the evening. Ask what additional readings are needed to understand power peaks and regular demand.

2. Understand self-consumption

This means using generated electricity on site. Its value depends on the match between production and demand. Schedule suitable uses during sunny hours when compatible with your activity. ADEME's self-consumption guidance explains the principle; its economic data concerns France and is not an estimate for a Moroccan project.

3. Assess the roof and shade

A visit checks exposure, shade, usable area and supports. Clarify obstacle treatment, maintenance access and waterproofing. For ground-mounted systems, consider access and future land uses. Layout, equipment and surroundings matter as much as panel numbers.

4. Select a suitable capacity

kWp is rated power under reference conditions; kWh is energy over a period. Request annual output estimates with location, orientation, shade and loss assumptions. A bigger installation is not automatically better for your consumption.

5. Assess batteries separately

Define whether you want later consumption or backup for specific appliances. Specify usable capacity, available power, warranties and supported equipment. Include storage cost in the total budget. Standard photovoltaics should not be assumed to operate during a grid outage; ask explicitly about backup architecture.

6. Compare detailed quotes

Require references for panels, inverter and batteries; supports, cables and protection; study, installation and commissioning; monitoring, manuals, warranties and maintenance; and applicable connection procedures. Confirm grid and surplus conditions with competent parties before budgeting electricity-sale revenue.

7. Arrange follow-up

Request a monitoring demonstration and support contacts. Assess output drops against weather and normal operating conditions. Electrical work and roof access require competence and suitable equipment. Retain the technical file, references and warranties for servicing and performance comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What does installation cost? Capacity, equipment, batteries and works determine the price; a site-based quote is more reliable than an unexplained price. Do panels replace a solar water heater? Photovoltaics generate electricity; thermal water heaters use solar heat for domestic hot water. What payback should I expect? Installed cost, actual generation, direct use and ongoing costs determine it. Request scenarios and written assumptions.
