Solar advice

Solar water heaters in Morocco: seven tips for choosing

Choosing a solar water heater starts with daily hot water use. Suitable equipment must match household habits, roof constraints and budget. Compare the full project rather than tank price alone.

1. Define hot water demand

Record occupants, shower times and other uses, including guests and simultaneous bathroom use. Ask how tank sizing considers your habits and collector area; litres alone do not establish suitability.

2. Understand the technology

Solar thermal captures heat for domestic hot water, unlike photovoltaics which generate electricity. Depending on design, circulation uses a thermosiphon or pump; building layout and tank position affect the choice. ADEME explains these principles. Any French grants or rules mentioned do not define conditions in Morocco.

3. Check the roof

In Casablanca, Marrakech or elsewhere, a technical visit checks space, shade, access and fixings. Neighbouring buildings or tanks can affect exposure. Clarify waterproofing and safe access. Pipe routing, insulation and heat losses matter when the tank is distant from outlets.

4. Plan suitable backup heating

Solar availability changes with weather and seasons. Ask how demand is met when sunlight is insufficient. The quote should explain backup type, operation and settings. A promise of permanently free hot water cannot replace a technical explanation.

5. Compare total cost

Require tank and collector specifications; supports, fixings and connections; insulated pipes and safety accessories; installation, commissioning and settings; warranties, maintenance and extra work. A cheaper offer may cover less.

6. Organise maintenance

Request a manual and model-specific checks. Water quality, access and circuit design affect maintenance. Professional teams should handle roof and technical work. Retain invoices, equipment references and warranty conditions.

7. Identify your project contact

Before signing, clarify who studies, installs and services the system. Request relevant references and written commitments. Clear maintenance arrangements matter alongside sales information. Explore our water heater solutions and prepare questions for the site study.

Frequently asked questions

Which capacity suits a family? Occupants, habits and backup heating determine the answer; use tailored sizing. Can it be installed on a flat roof? Suitable supports and fixings may allow it after structure, exposure and waterproofing checks. What is the payback period? It depends on installed cost, replaced energy, consumption and maintenance; request an estimate with assumptions. Send Novasolar safe roof photos, occupant count and current equipment details for a tailored proposal.
